Elizabeth Winslow was the mother of Sunny Winslow. She was a former hippie & a vegetarian. She used to be a potter and made beautiful stoneware. When she was a child, she was very shy and never did anything brave. She started keeping a diary when she was fourteen. She kept diaries up until Sunny was born. In high school, she joined cheerleading and young republicans. She later quit and organisés a peace march, which angered her parents. She decided to go to UCLA, instead of the conservative college her parents wanted her to go to. She started to date Sunnys father, and he proposed to her on a cliff. A few years before Sunny was born, her parents died in a car accident. She later found out that she couldn’t have any more children after Sunny, but she thought 3 people was perfect.

Maggie wrote that they were never bored when she went to the Winslow’s. She always came up with something to do, like making veggie burgers. She was full of life and love.

She started smoking when she was 13 years old and was later diagnosed with lung cancer. She was hospitalized for chemotherapy which caused her to lose her hair. She wore a wig and her clothes hung loosely on her body. She became friends with a support group, who gave her a limo to drive her home. She got sick a lot, especially colds and fevers. She started to get irritated by certain smells, and only weighed about 90pounds. Her cancer later spread to her bones. She went bald, got age spots, and got wrinkles and colorless skin. In the hospital, Dawn took her to see Gracie. She had an oxygen mask.

In the later books, her cancer became worse. She started to have bad memory, have mood swings, and barely concentrate. She got terrible sores on her mouth. In book 11, the year eventually stopped treatment. She had to get pain medication and fell asleep while people talked. Close to death, she became very alert. She died with Morgan, Sunny, and Mr. Winslow at her side.In the California Diaries, Elizabeth passes away from lung cancer. She was one of the warmest people that Dawn Schafer knew and considered her to be a second mother.
